Silly Story
« on: July 23, 2010, 11:51:15 PM »
I can't exactly remember how Silly Story came to be.  I think it had to do with a conversation with Pan, but really, I don't know.  The story is of the OOC-RP genre I guess.  I'm there, my RP characters are there, some of Pan's and some other buddies.

I guess a huge fault of the story is if you don't know my RP characters or who my other friends are... well it's not going to be a thrilling read.  It's probably not a thrilling read even if you know all this.  Another huge problem is that I've been slowly been writing it for years.  I write a chapter then forget about it for several months then write another one.  So jokes and stuff have aged horribly.

Pretty much, almost all of Silly Story I've written so far has become a thing of shame.  If you really want to read it, here's the old stuff.  If you don't, here's a summary of what's happened so far.

Quote
Chapter 1: My three RPCs - West, Nero and Tsane get in an argument with me.  I kinda fire them and they kinda quit.  They have to move out.
Chapter 2+3: The three guys find an apartment to live.
Chapter 4: The guys talk about getting jobs.  Tsane talks about getting a job at a gym, West and Nero will attempt to get a job as waiters.
Chapter 5: I put an ad in the newspaper looking for new RPCs.
Chapter 6: Nero and West try their hand at waiting.  West's illiteracy gets him banished to the position of dishboy.  Nero has a small slipup, but is offered the job if he cuts his hair.  He refuses.
Chapter 7: Tsane gets his job.  They all go out to a Chinese restaurant for dinner.  Jokes about eating cat.
Chapter 8:  I watch some other RP characters audition.  They're all balls.  A couple of Pan's (Laena, Jadenar and Kaelan) show up at the auditions and I hire them.
Chapter 9: West has split ends.  Nero throws a fit.  West vows revenge.
Chapter 10: West gets revenge.
Chapter 11: Nero runs into Kaelen and me during a trip to the city.  He realises they've been replaced by Pan's RPCs.  (He also has a long lasting one-way feud with Kaelan).
Chapter 12: Nero tells West about Kaelan.  West says he'll deal with it.  Nero attempts to cook.
Chapter 13: West hires a Ninja called Frank cause some shit at my place.
Chapter 14:  Frank comes and causes some shit at my place.  Kaelan scares him off.
Chapter 15: Nero gets his hair styled.  Frank shows up at the boys' place and says the job costs $20 000.  West obviously can't afford that, and instead pays him with Nero's priceless family heirloom.
Chapter 16: Nero rages at the loss of his heirloom.  West arranges another meeting with Frank.    Three post fight scene.  Nero hears voices and they teach him a strange spell he's never even heard of before.
Chapter 17: Nero sleeps for almost a whole day, and the next day gets a mysterious package from a guild called 'Red Judgement' who are talented mages who reside all over Australia.  The guild doesn't want non-mages hearing about their activities, so all their work is done in secret, which causes a rift between Nero, Tsane and West.

Chapter 18

Nero hadn't felt this excited about a job in a long time.  Sure he liked roleplaying.  It gave him opportunity to prance around and be the hero without all the hassle of actual travelling.  However, magic is where Nero's heart really lay.  He'd studied it all his life.  His father was the regional councillor of Altaire!  If this guild thing worked out, it would be a dream come true.

None of the boys owned a computer so Nero walked down to the nearest library.  Despite his profession, Nero almost never visited the library.  Australian libraries never stocked magic books!  Frankly, it was a little insulting.  He'd wondered to himself if perhaps they just kept them in a locked room out back so the kids couldn't get their grubby paws on them - but he doubted it.  All these libraries were much too innocent looking.  Not a single ghost in them.

He selected a computer in the most secluded part of the library - looking nervously over his shoulder he inserted the USB.  The computer was old, and it took a while for the file contained within to load.

What it was was a slim interface - a little like a forum.  All the members there had only two letter screen names.  Nero could see in the top corner of the application, his was NV.  So the were people's initials.  It was a little scary actually.  The guild didn't even trust their own members with each other's names.  It was almost like one of the bilboards from back home.  There were discussions about where to buy magic books, listings for jobs all around the country, and people buying and selling second hand goods.

Of course, all that could wait.  What Nero was here for was to earn some money - so he went straight to the job listings section.  There were listings for jobs all around the country.  Some of them already had been claimed by other guild members.  Nero picked one in Canberra - a good central location too and worth $500.

Wanted:
Clerical Mage with experience in banishment and enchantment.  The wards surrounding Woden Cemetery have begun to fade, and sightings of ghosts have been reported by visitors.  The mage must exorcise any ghosts that are inhabiting the area and rebuild the wards which prevent the ghosts forming.

The wards are a three-tier system, first constructed in 1945 by Miles Rielly using 6 pointed magic symbols and --

Nero stopped reading there.  He wasn't a clerical mage.  He might be able to rebuild the wards - six points, thee tier... it all sounded very easy, but the ghosts themselves could cause a problem.  If the wards were first constructed in 1945, chances are that some of the ghosts were soldiers - and that was especially something he didn't want to deal with.

He was still excited by the guild and opportunities and started his search again.  There were still plenty he could join, especially if he was willing to make a trip out to Sydney.  Canberra is such a hole!  Nothing interesting ever happens there.  There were hundreds more jobs in Sydney and often they payed much better.

Wanted:
Experienced Mage with good knowledge in enchantments and spellbinding.

What sank the SS Undola, SS Myola AND SS Tuggerah?  Most would say three independant storms.  However, the truth is a water spirit resides at the bottom of Sydney Cove.  However, the barrier protecting our coastline from this creature is wearing thin (Remember the storm of April 22nd?) If this creature is not sealed away again, more violent storms will begin to ravish Sydney's coast.

The barrier runs along Garie Beach, fastened to two magic becons on either end.  The spell, first constructed in 1912 by an unknown mage is level 6, using a combination of 6, 8 and 11 pointed circles and the bound with Madame Marisa von Elville's theory of the combination or real and unreal matter (Read: The Two Worlds: Successfully incorporating real matter in long term spells).  However, if the mage is able to, a higher level spell would be preferred (and you will be compensated for your trouble).

30 dollars in bus fares to earn $1500 to recharge a magic seal.  This spell was very difficult, but not impossible.  He'd studied Marisa von Elville's theories as a student - and although he could remember the jist of it, he couldn't remember the exact details - and this was a bit worrying.  To be able to complete this task, he'd have to find another copy of the book.

Regardless, Nero clicked the button which assigned himself to the job.  Slowly, using only his pointer fingers, Nero typed:

I can take this one... if someone lends me a copy of 'The Two Worlds'.

Nero spent the remainder of the hour he had booked looking through the rest of the software.  There was a woman who grew a large assortment of plants which could be used in potions.  The prices weren't too good, but once you factor in local shipping, the time and postage costs easily made up for it.  There was a horror story of an old guild member recently arrested.  Apparently he predicted a friend's death.  After his death, the police heard about this and are now looking into the mage for conspiracy or murder.

Suddenly, a tune sounded from his phone.  A new message from someone called SP.

Hey newcomer!  I noticed you're in Canberra, and I was wondering if you wanted to catch up.  There aren't enough mages around here.  I can also lend you that copy of The Two Worlds!

Chapter 19

Nero and 'SP' agreed on meeting in a cafe in the centre of town - a small, but extremely well known place which specialised in pancakes.  A short bus ride later, Nero found himself at the Pancake Parlour.  The shop had a very vintage feel.  As you enter you pass by an old newspaper - the headline proudly proclaiming 'Pancake Insult! Dancer Whips Cook' and a clunking machine full of gears and pulleys - an old fashioned 'Pancake Stamping' machine.  Inside, more newspaper articles, vintage posters surrounding secluded booths.

"Just one?" a fair haired waitress asked as Nero descended down the stairs.  Nero shook his head.

"I'm meeting a friend here."  The woman lead him to a booth in the opposite side of the restaurant.  Sitting down, there was a man - perhaps a little older than Nero with a mess of brown hair, and square framed glasses.  With him was a woman - probably the same age as Nero, with stunning red hair, full lips and long nails painted pink.

Nero slid into the booth, opposite them.  There was a nervous pause between the group.  "So which of you is..."

"That's me," said the girl.  "Call me Sammy," she reached her hand across the table, and Nero shook it politely.

"Nero," he responded.

"I'm Kyle," the man said, and Nero shook his hand too.  Another awkward silence.

"Should we be sharing our names... the guild seems to be pretty..."  Sammy silenced him with a dismissive wave of her hand.

"Don't worry too much about that.  So!" she added in a particularly cheery voice.  "Tell us about yourself."

Asking Nero about himself is like opening a bucket of worms.  If the two listening got bored of his rambling, they politely hid it - but Nero gushed for a good 10 minutes.

"And then I saw her in Mankua with Kaelan!  Oh, I don't know if I mentioned him, but he's this..." he groaned, not being able to think of the appropriate word to describe the wind mage.  "And he thinks his wind magic is sooooo good.  It's not even real magic!  It's the wind!  You're about as useful as a pair of bellows!"

"Wait wait wait," Kyle calmed Nero down.  "You know another mage around here?"

Nero fell silent for a moment.  He realised what he'd done.  He couldn't take it back now - especially since he was a brand new member himself.

"Yeah, but he's a real arsehole," Nero simply replied.  Kyle laughed.

"I'll keep that in mind."

Next, Kyle and Sammy introduced themselves.  Sammy was an Australian who studied abroad in Altaire as a child.  As she was not extremely gifted with innate magic, she preferred making potions.  "If you know the right ingredients, a potion is just as powerful as any enchantment," she explained with a solemn nod.  Nero strongly disagreed, but managed to keep it to himself.

Kyle was a 'new breed' of mage.  He hadn't began to study until he was well into his teens - and even then, he never left Australia, preferring to study online and work alone at his own.  Despite his looks, Nero was quite a traditionalist - and this was all shocking.

"Wait, what!  How-- Didn't you have a teacher?"  Kyle shook his head.

"I didn't need a teacher.  There's information on the Internet about everything.  Recipes, maps, instructions on how to make bombs - so of course there's plenty of stuff about magic.  It's just knowing how to tell the crackpot sites full of gothic 16 year olds from the legit sites.  And it's even easier now with Youtube and e-books."

"E-books?"

"Yeah, look."

Kyle pulled his iPhone out of his pocket - exactly the same as the one that Red Justice sent Nero.  He double clicked on an application, and instantly the screen filled with text.   "Right now I'm reading Serena Aquanus' theories on the origins of the Ancient Language."  With a simple flick of his finger, the page turned.  "It's so much easier.  It's cheaper, because I don't need to pay to get them brought over from Altaire, it's more convenient because I can only fit so much in my apartment, and I can carry around hundreds or thousands of books at once.  Disaster strikes, and I need to remember the right characters to bind a demon's magic," with several more precision taps and movements of his finger, he opened another book.  "Bam, I can instantly look at my copy of Theory of Demons and the Lesser Planes."

Nero smiled faintly.  It was impressive, but nothing compared to the real smell and feel of a book.  They represented knowledge, and this was just text on a screen

"I could teach you how to set it up if you want," Kyle added as he slipped his phone back in his pocket.

"Urh, I'll be fine."

Sammy slapped Kyle playfully.  "He's a real Alt!  Not a bogan Australian.  I'm surprised he didn't fry you for even mentioning you read e-books!"  Sammy slipped her hand into her magic box. "Anyway," she said, pulling a thick tome out.  Its red cover had faded, but it was actually in surprisingly good condition - its pages white and all intact.  "Here's the real thing."  Nero grinned and took it from her.

"Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it."

"Are you sure you want to take such an ambitious job as your first one."

Nero considered it a moment.  It was quite an difficult job - but nothing he couldn't manage.  Ideally, he'd like to bring Tsane or West along.  West would probably piss himself in excitement at the thought of some real action.  He'd probably have to drop the barrier during the repairs - and then who knew what would happen.

"The spell itself, I think I can manage fine.  I'm just worried about what would happen if I had to drop the barrier during the repairs.  I can't bring any of my mates as backup?"

"Now that is one thing the guild is pretty strict about," Sammy said.  "I haven't even told my mother."

"But my room mates both know what magic is.  They're Zirans!"

"Well you can contact a superior over the RJ interface," Sammy explained.  "Ask them for permission.  I strongly doubt they'd give it however."
