Bachman followed the two young women at a distance. While he would try and act the part of his back story, he did not know if he could follow the idea of a widower that well... he had never been in love, so he had no idea what one acts when it was lost.
Instead he decided to do what he did best- to be an ear and to look intimidating. The latter was not too difficult, and years in a confessional booth had given him a sharp ear. Looking a such would keep most people away, giving him more time to listen.
The tux he wore was a bit tight on the shoulders, making him flex every now and then in discomfort. He was also not use to such flat footed shoes, and had been wary when Ruby had shoved them into his hands.
"Shoes make the outfit, darling." She had said. A slight scowl crossed his face. Did everyone wear such uncomfortable shoes? As he made his into the crowd, he saw Poppy look back. She looked a bit frightened, and he almost gave her a reassuring nod before catching himself and turning a way, heading to a table loaded with various drinks and party food. If anyone saw them interacting with each other... well, it would seem suspicious. Instead he went to the table and poured himself a glass of punch. He knew better than to drink anything at such parties; almost every time the punch was spiked with some sort of alcohol. Instead he took a small, fake sip from the glass and turned, looking out over the patrons and keeping his ears and eyes open. The game was afoot.

Eliza strode through the throngs of people. She saw Bachman grab a glass of punch and pretend to sip and became impressed. For someone not used to this, he sure picked up on things. She found a tray of wine and took a glass with her, doing the same.
They stopped at one wall and leaned against it. Bachman stood a few feet away, pretending to be a separate party. Eliza steeped closer to Poppy, who's eyes followed the party was a sparkle of excitement.
"See that man?" she whispered. "Over there? Talking to that taller man? That's Thomas Portello: son to the crime boss of the Falcon's rival gang, the East Side Bullets. If anything, we might have luck talking to him."
She pretended to sip and glanced at Poppy. "If we're going to go over there, we should be careful. Almost everyone here is a mobster or some very important corrupted politician. These people have money, power and lots of guns on their person. Extreme caution must be made. Got that, Hamilton?"
At the corner of her eye, Bachman nodded so slightly it was hard to tell if he moved at all.
"I guess we should start making our way over there." Eliza whispered.

Poppy nodded slowly, looking over at where Eliza had pointed. The young man was quite handsome, she'd give him that.
"But... What do we talk to him about?" She asked. The scene she pictured in her mind went a little like this:
She walked up to Thomas Portello.
"So, what do you make of the deaths in the Falcons lately?"
"You're a spy!" Thomas shouted, taking out a gun from his coat and shooting everyone in range.
Poppy shuddered a bit. Hopefully, that wouldn't happen.

With Poppy close by and Bachman tagging closely behind, Eliza strode towards Thomas.
This is easy, this is easy
, she told herself confidently. She gave Poppy a quick nod.
Thomas was sitting against the counter of the bar, facing the crowd and talking to another man around his age. They were laughing, and the conversation didn't seem to show any buisness-like auras. Eliza began to think about her profiles she had in her filing cabinet back at the office and recognized his face from a profile but she remembered the file being organized in a lesser criminal folder. She pushed the thought out of her mind. Right now, Portello was the one they needed to talk to.
Eliza leaned against the bar beside him. She saw Thomas glance at Poppy and her with a glimmer of interest. That was a good enough sign in Eliza's book.
"Great party." she smiled, her voice suddenly turing deeper and her persona becoming mature and calm. She tipped her glass in his direction. "Come here often?"

"Not really..." Portello replied. "Though if you two dolls are regulars, I may show up more." He offered a charming grin. Waving the other man away, he motioned toward the bartender. A glass soon appeared in his hand.
"So, you and your cute friend have names?" He asked.
Poppy blushed slightly, reaching up and twisting a dark curl around her finger.
"I'm Rebecca." She said with a small smile. "This is my cousin Edith."
"A pleasure, ladies." He said, raising his glass. Poppy giggled, but as she met his eyes, she suddenly felt a chill. They were normal enough, but something was off about him. She couldn't place it, nor could she even tell what that something was. She and Eliza would have to stay around him a bit longer before she could be sure.

Bachman kept an eye on the two as an older woman attempted to start a conversation with him. He could tell that Flanagan had felt something by the way she went a bit rigid in the back- and it concerned him... not so much out of worry for her, but more a worry that someone might notice. The woman talking to him had an annoyingly large, gaping red maw of a mouth, moving so fast he could barely keep up. She seemed to think that he was someone she knew, from the way she was talking to him. He nodded and grunted in at her short and far between pauses, pretending to listen to her as his eyes gazed around the crowd and occasionally settling on the two girls at the bar.
A large man, built like a brick wall, walked in through one of the side doors. He looked around the room dumbly before stalking his way to the bar and settling at the far end. Turning his steely eyes to the left he gazed along it till he found who he was looking for- Portello. He had just gone to the bathroom for a minute and already the kid was already chatting it up with a couple of birds. Scoffing, he almost didn't notice the bartender walk up and place a scotch on the rocks in front of him.
"Admiring the kid's skills, Randy?" Randy's eyes snapped up to the bartender, and he gave the man a lopsided smile.
"Boss jus' said to keep an eye on 'im, so that's what I'm doin'." The bartender shook his head and walked over to another patron as Randy picked up his drink. Lazy work, he thought as he took a drink of it. At least everyone else was getting to have fun.

"What brought you two here?"
Eliza had planned out an answer to that question, but the fact that Thomas had turned all his attention on her and Poppy surprised her.
"Rebecca here lives out of town." she said, cooly. "I go to college in the city, and I invited her to come visit. We sort of found this place. I guess we needed a night of fun."
Poppy nodded. She had gotten a wine glass as well and was fake sipping it every now and again. Further beyond her, Eliza saw Bachman in the middle of a conversation with a woman, or rather, having his ear talked off by a very chatty woman. The scene made Eliza smile but she ignored it.
Thomas smiled, turning his seat inward towards the bar counter. "Yeah, well, I know what you mean. I needed a night off, too." he said, smoothly. "Business is going well. I needed a break, you know?"
"Business?" Eliza asked. "You? A businessman? What sort of business?"
Thomas laughed. "Let's just say it's a delicate, special kind of business."
Eliza sat there, pretending to mull his words over, then suddenly, she jumped.
"Wait!" she whispered. "Wait, wait! Are you a gangster?! A real one?"
Thomas chuckled. "I guess you could say that."
Eliza grinned. "Wow." she whispered. "Oh my. A gangster. How exciting!"

"Goodness..." Poppy giggled. "My first night in the city and I've met a gangster... I may have to stay in Chicago longer than I first planned!"
"You should." Portello said with a nod. "Plenty of things to see. You're from the South, right?" Poppy was startled for a minute.
"I'm from Texas, yes... but how on earth did you know that?" She asked incredulously. Portello laughed.
"Your accent's pretty faint, but I've got good ears." He grinned. Suddenly, he stopped, noticing the man at the far end of the bar. His expression momentarily contorted into something that Poppy knew was not at all normal.
"If you two lovely ladies would excuse me," He said, standing up, "I believe I need to speak with one of my associates."
"Oh, it's no trouble." Poppy said sweetly. "I was just about to go powder my nose, anyway!" She stood as well, looking back at Eliza and hoping she got the signal.

Sorry guys, not really a post right now, but rather shameless advertisement.
In the artwork section of the site, I started a Raven Coalition comic. Just a thank you for actually joining the first real RPG I even participated in. So yeah.
Thanks.
I'll get another post up later.

[[DUDE that comic is going to rock so hard. I'm excited! <3<3<3 ]]
Bernardo watched carefully as the man they were talking to excused himself and made his way to the other end of the bar. Well that was a bit odd, he though, as he excused himself (rather rudely) from the woman's conversation (not that she seemed to notice, she turned to the next available ear) and carefully maneuvered his way over by the two men. He took a seat at the bar and set his punch on it, putting on a serious face that screamed "leave me alone or else I just got turned down by a woman"... or, at least, that was what he had been told it was. He fidgeted with his glass in a normal fashion, pretending not to be listening to the men sitting a few seats away.
Randy raised his drink as Portello approached him. "Evening, kid. How's the party?" A lopsided smile spread over his face again as he took another drink from his glass. "You've got some pretty birds hangin' off your shoulders tonight, hoss."

Eliza's ears pricked at the sound of Poppy's cue, and she slowly got up and followed her towards the restroom.
"Caught something?" she whispered. She noticed Poppy looking back nervously at Thomas, but Eliza jerked her arm forward. "Don't look back." she whispered, barely moving her lips. "We can't look suspicious. See? Bachman is gonna keep an eye on him."
They stepped back into a hallway leading to the kitchen and stood around the corner, Eliza standing far out enough to see Bachman and Thomas.
"Rebecca?" she whispered. "Is the person here? You felt something's presence, right? Is it that guy talking to Thomas? Or did you pick up something off him, too?"

As they began to walk away, it suddenly hit Poppy. This was real. They could all be in danger right now, if she didn't pull her own weight. For some reason, her heart began to pound, almost to the point that it was painful. She let Eliza pull her around a corner, then leaned heavily against the wall, her face pale even in the dim light.
"I-I don't know what it was..." She murmured, shaking her head, "but it was definitely coming from Thomas. Something's off about him. But I've never sensed anything like it before." She pushed her headband back, letting out a shaky sigh.
"Ellie, I don't even know if it's a demon or not. It's so strange... I don't know what to do now." She looked at her friend, her lower lip quivering. "I don't know."

Eliza sighed watching Poppy's nervous, pale face in the dim hallway. "Look," she said, softly. "This may actually help us. What if these attacks were only caused by an individual or maybe just a small group. It may not be the whole gang at all."
Poppy said nothing. "I mean, if you found the one person, we may have already found our man. Still, the weird man with him is, in my guess, involved." She looked back at Bachman. "I hope he hears something useful."
Bachman sat silently across the room, motionless at the counter. The two men's conversation lasted a while and, during that time, Bachman showed no sign of emotion or realization. He simply sat still, listening and occasionally taking a fake sip of punch.
He's good at this
, Eliza thought.
Suddenly, Thomas stood up and looked over at the other end of the bar where they had been sitting minutes ago. "Quick! Poppy!" Eliza hissed. "He's looking for us! We have to get back! Come on!"

"O-oh. Right." Poppy took a deep breath, then readjusted her headband. "Let's go."
Once she re-entered the mass of the party, she felt slightly better. Portello caught sight of the two of them, and he nodded slightly. Poppy pushed a stray curl behind her ear and sat down at the bar next to him.
"Didn't keep you waiting, did we?" She asked coyly.
"Not a bit." He said. "Hope I didn't scare you off." He added, sipping his drink. She shook her head.
"So... What were you boys talking about over there?" She asked innocently. His face darkened, and Poppy's heart began to race again.
"I'm afraid, miss... Rebecca, was it? That that is highly confidential information." He took a sip of his drink again, and his normal grin returned.
"One thing you need to learn about the big city, doll..." He picked up a glass of wine from a passing tray and slid it toward her. "Sometimes, the less you know about something... the better off you'll be."

Eliza caught Bachman's eye from the distance. He nodded slightly, and she began to wonder if he had heard something crucial. She wanted to go ask him, but she stayed put.
Suddenly, Portello flashed her and Poppy a smile. "I kinda wanted to see you two." he chuckled. "You see, a friend of mine just arrived and says I'm needed elsewhere."
"Oh, dear." Eliza gushed. "And you were just on such a nice break, too."
"Yeah," he laughed. "But you know, work and things. They get in the way." He reached into his pocket suddenly. "I'm not really supposed to do this, but you two have grown on me. Here's my number." He handed it to Eliza, who took it with wide eyes.
"Thank you." she smiled.
"I may have some time tomorrow," he said slowly. "If you want to, you can both call me. And," he winked at Poppy who's face went red. "Since you're only in town for so long you might as well have some fun before you go, am I right?"
He gave them a small wave before following the strange man out the door. Eliza watched until the doors swung shut before she held up the phone number.
"This is a beaut'," she whistled. "I get numbers from people I investigate. I call them trophies, you know. This is the first time a crime lord's son handed his over so easily. This is a trophy for the two of us." Poppy's nerves remained and Eliza stopped joking. "Come on, we have to get Bachman quickly and we're chasing them."
