The cloaked, hooded woman had been leaning against that one wall for a while, drawing all kinds of attention. Maybe it was the two backpacks lying on the ground next to her, or the way she greeted everyone who passed by with a word or two, when no . No, it was most definitely the rifle on her back.

The train arrived, she looked at it, and at the people leaving it. He would be amongst all that people, or at least he said he would. It didn't take her too long to spot James - yup, that was him right there, talking to two persons she didn't know. No time to lose - before she was spotted...

She started quickly walking towards the tall man, who was facing the other way, and left the two backpacks lying there. She also took her Narcissus with her - she'd need it. People looked, and some gasped, as she got closer to him, unnoticed by her friend. When she was close enough, she pointed her rifle at the back of his head.

A second of silence. Then, she softly poked the back of his head with the barrel of the Narcissus.

"BANG!" She loudly shouted mere milliseconds after she poked him, causing the big guy to gasp and freeze in place. She then put the rifle on her back again (not taking more than a second at that, as if she had done the same thing a gazillion times) and clung to him, laughing.

"Oh, hi James!"

James burst out laughing, grabbing for her while waiting for his heart rate to go back to normal.
"Lena!"  He growled.  "Ya whelp... c'mere!"  He hugged the woman in a friendly way.
"Ain't seen you in... Can't even remember!"  He said with a grin.  It made him happy to see his close friend.  He then caught sight of the Cheshires out of the corner of his eye, and straightened up, clearing his throat.
"Uh, yes..."  He said.  "Lena, this is Mr. Oz Cheshire.  You heard about him in my letter.  Mr. Cheshire, allow me to introduce Miss Lena Rodriguez.  You wanted the best, and I found it."
"A pleasure, miss."  Oz said, extending his hand to the woman.
"And Miss Eleanor Cheshire will be accompanying us."  James added.  Eleanor nodded politely, but did not speak.
"How about we find ourselves a nice place to chat?"  Oz asked.  "I'm sure you're curious as to what you have been hired for..."

James did not know much of his employer.  Indeed, he had no idea whether he and Lena had been hired as bodyguards or as mercenaries.
Then again...  The man thought, he IS bringing his granddaughter along...  So it can't be all that dangerous, can it?  He'd seen his fair share of combat serving under General Lee during the Great War...  He didn't need to see much more.

Lena happily shook the man's hand, and didn't say much more. She followed the old man - strange name, Oz - to a "nice place to chat", as he had put it. That place ended up being the place where Lena had been waiting for them, and where she had left her bags. Well, that was no coincidence, because it was Lena who was leading the way to retrieve her belongings.

"So Mr. Cheshire." In her opinion, that place was as good as any other. By-passers never care, and those who do care have no trouble spying on a conversation, no matter where it takes place. Besides, there was a bench there, and if they didn't hurry, someone else could take it.

"I am curious alright. What is our... job?"

That lone word had a lot of meaning to Lena. She was still half-expecting Oz to tell her a name and a location.

(Aw geez, I haven't the slightest clue how to cut in for these. Hope this isn't awful.)

The station was crowded to the point of being uncomfortable. Then again, crowded was uncomfortable. "God damnit, I wish we'd get this vacation going soon!" Lily growled to herself, trying to make herself slide between the people as if it were an obstacle course or some sort and touching anyone would result in sudden death. Truthfully, these people weren't expecting her, but she had heard some fellow travelers related to her trip were arriving today. She wanted to surprise them, to say the least.

A rushed gentleman bumped into her, and she hissed out an angry, "Excuse me!" before storming off. Boy, these people really enjoyed taking the busy train. And for crying out loud, she didn't really know what they looked like. Things were just getting worse, it seemed.

All while her pessimistic frustration raged on, she spotted a man turning to hug the woman behind him who was, in other words, holding a gun to his head.

What is wrong with this city?! she thought. Who ever heard of a mugger hugging her victim!?

Oz was about to speak, but then Eleanor tapped him on the shoulder.
"Something on your mind, Nellie?"  He asked.  Eleanor scowled at him using her nickname in public, then pointed.  Oz looked through the crowd, then spotted a choppy brown haircut that could only belong to one person.  He smiled at James and Lena.
"If you would excuse me for a moment...  I believe my granddaughter has located one of my students..."  He pushed his way through the crows with surprising strength for someone of his stature.  He grabbed Lily by the arm.
"Ah, Lillian.  So good of you to join us."  He said cheerfully.  "I was hoping you'd accept my offer.  Right this way..."  He led her back to the group.  "You remember my granddaughter Eleanor?"  Eleanor nodded politely, but said nothing.  Oz introduced Lily around.  James tipped his hat with a polite 'how d'you do, ma'am'.
"Now then, since we're here, how about we find somewhere a bit more private?"  Oz gestured over to a small cafe.  James cringed inwardly.  It looked expensive.
"Nothing to worry about, James."  Oz said good-naturedly.  "I am funding this little venture.  Merely a business expense."  He winked.

They found a table in the corner.  James pulled out chairs for the ladies before sitting down himself.  Drinks were ordered, and they talked about nothing for a while.  Finally, Oz put down his glass.
"Enough of the small talk.  I assume you would like to know about what it is we will be doing..."  He reached into his pocket, fumbling for the small object that lay carefully wrapped in a handkerchief.  Eleanor groaned inwardly.  Here we go...  Grandfather always had a flair for the dramatic...

Lily had jumped at the sensation of being grabbed by the arm so suddenly. Her bewildered look was ignored by the others and she was quickly introduced to the "mugger" and her "victim." She remained quiet as they shook her hand and kept silent when Oz introduced Eleanor as someone she had met before. Perhaps not in a long time, Lily said to herself. The name rang bells but she couldn't place where they had met.

They all began to move their conversations to a cafe. Most of them seemed talkative, as if they knew each other already, but Lily bounded behind, silently interested in her new companions. Maybe one at a time they looked like normal people. But placed together, they seemed like an odd bunch.

Lily thought odd people were just delightful.

Perhaps the day was looking up. She sat, absorbing Oz's speeches and melodramatic hand gestures as she sipped her coffee. Another expedition WAS exciting. But it wasn't until Oz pulled a small object from his coat with a long draw, holding it towards them to see, did she fully bring her attention to him.

"Come on, show us already!" she grinned, making the others look at her as she spoke for the first time.

Such a great use of suspense. Lena would have to take notes: the way things were going, a seemingly trivial piece of information - or so she thought at first - had just become something truly desirable.

She had taken out her notepad when that Lillian person was introduced to them - she remembered she had drawn a happy face to show her new friend, but by the time she was finished drawing, the time for introductions was long gone.

The point being, she was holding her notepad.

Holding the information indefinitely will raise suspense, even if said information is not that important or interesting, she scribbled.

"Yes, move on and say when you're ready.", she said distractedly as she took notes. She was trying to agree with Lily, but she was too focused on her notes to pay full attention to what the girl had just said.

Eleanor watched as Oz took an object from his pocket.  A small leather-bound book was set in the center of the table.

"I came across this a few months ago while in Dover..." He opened the cover and flipped through a few pages.  It was filled with small, neat cursive, punctuated here and there by roughly-sketched topography.
"After some analysis and a bit of research..."  He paused for dramatic effect.  "I think I've found a guide that will lead me right to the Grand Easterly itself."

The Grand Easterly.  The prized flagship had been lost nearly a century before under unknown circumstances.  Since then, rumors had circulated that it held everything from unimaginable wealth to technology beyond comprehension.  Many expeditions had set out in search of the massive dirigible, either returning broken and empty-handed, or not returning at all.

James took a look at the book, letting out a low whistle.
"And that's not all."  Oz said with a grin.  "Show them, Nellie."  Eleanor sighed, undoing the top button on her high collar to reach the chain that hung around her neck.  Attached to the chain was an antique compass, dulled with age.  She slipped the necklace over her head, placing the compass face down on the table.  Upon the back of the bronze casing were stamped the barely-legible words: Grand Easterly.

Curiously, Lily leaned over the table to grab the compass. Eleanor raised an eyebrow at this action, but Lily was too mesmerized by the object to notice.

"It's old, obviously," Lily commented. "But the design is beautiful. Quite interesting. Much nicer than mine. Oh, sorry." She set it back, but Oz only smiled.

"This compass is related to research?" she asked, now settled in her seat. "How's that gonna work? It's built to point to this place or is it going to start talking to us and giving directions? I don't mind. Either way's fine with me."

Looking around the table, she could see similar reactions on her companions' faces. They looked questioningly at the faded compass as it lay on the table. It looked nothing more than ordinary.

Only once she was done taking notes did Lena look at the object Oz had presented. She did so just in time to hear Lily's question - and chuckled a bit. She was now definitely sure she liked her.

"The Grand Easterly..." She nodded in approval. "I've heard of that. Who hasn't? Big boat, people like to believe there's lots of neat stuff inside. In the place where I was raised, there were lots of stories about the Easterly. They ranged from fantastic to lame. Anywho." A small pause, as she took the compass and distractedly started examining it. "Like Lilian said... how's this supposed to help?"

It won't.  Eleanor thought.  It's nothing more than a useless trinket...  I doubt it even IS from the Easterly.  Still, she kept her mouth shut.
"I haven't quite figured out how it works just yet..."  Oz shrugged.  "Will it help, I don't know.  But what I DO know is how we're going to get there."  He grinned.  Eleanor picked the compass back up and slipped the chain back over her head, buttoning up her collar again.

"I've researched the Easterly for years."  Oz said, lacing his fingers together on the table.  "There are hundreds, if not thousands of speculations as to what might have happened to her.  I've managed to narrow it down to three possible locations for her final resting place.  Nellie, if you please."

Eleanor sighed, taking a small map from her satchel and spreading it on the table.  Oz grabbed the various cups and bottles belonging to the others and placed them at the corners to keep the map from re-rolling itself.

"She could have been blown off course.  There'd been quite a gale the last night she was seen.  That would land her out over the ocean, and scholars confirm that her supplies wouldn't last long enough to get her back home.  So she could be lying at the bottom of the sea, somewhere around the Verne Trench."  He tapped a point on the map.  "Our first stop will be Marinacea, to ask the residents about whether they've seen anything."

"Marinacea?"  James asked nervously.  "You mean Atlantis?  But..."  He bit back his nervousness.  True, humans had been able to live beneath the waves in that city of domes and spires... but if the Lord wanted humans to be able to live underwater, He would have made them have gills...

Lena nodded, even though she still didn't know why the hell would she - who was all but a researcher, much less an archaeologist - and Jamie be needed in such a journey. Her job was (or at least, had been) shooting stuff for money, and some times - very rarely - save stuff from getting shot. For money, of course.

Even so, she was honestly excited. She got even more excited when she heard the word, Marinacea.

A gloomy room. In the middle of the room, a wooden crate, and a few bags here and there. A man sitting on the crate. A young boy or girl, lying on the ground facing the ceiling. The man's features could not be seen properly, as the one light source in the room was a single candle.

"Hey Bob, tell me that story again!", the child said.

"I dunno, little one... it's way past yer bedtime. Ye should go to sleep..."

"Come on, Bob! We both know you just want to get rid of me as soon as possible so you can go and rob that rich man's place with the guys once I fall asleep. I know you all too well, Alleyway Robert." The kid mimicked Aunt Anita's - the local motherly figure for all thieves - nagging tone. "Now tell the story."

"... why do I even bother keeping secrets from ye. I promise, next week yer comin' with us." The man sighed. "Very well. Far away from here, there's this place... and I swear I've been there once... called Atlantis. It's nothing like these slums... it is a pretty place... and..."

The man spoke for a few minutes, but the young girl had already fallen asleep... when he noticed, he got up and left. One day, he thought, he would take the young girl there.

"Well... that house ain't gonna rob itself... I'll be sure to get ya somethin' nice."
