CHARACTERS SO FARSparrow's Nerd- Eleanor "Nell" Cheshire. Not used to being in the field, and complains and hates bugs and stuff. Doesn't like people and is rather socially awkward, prefers to be off by herself taking notes or spazzing to whatever unfortunate soul's in earshot about ancient civilizations and the latest discoveries. Possibly related to the financier of the expedition, sent along in order to protect the investment and report back, not to be of any real help. She's smarter than she looks, though. Sparrow's Gun- James Crosier. Former soldier of the Confederate States of America, a good ol' boy from the glorious city of Houston, Texas. Easily over 6 feet and built like a brick wall, with several scars and maybe a tattoo. A gruff voice, but is always polite, has a bit of a Rhett Butler accent. Refers to all females as 'Miss _____' or 'Ma'am', respects ladies just like his mama taught him. Polite to the gents as well, of course. If he's not the boss of the guns, he'll call the boss 'sir'. Other males he refers to as 'Mr.'. Swears he's never started a fight in his life... but he's finished plenty of 'em. Preferred weapon is a rifle he calls 'The Colonel', the same one he swears saved his life during the Great War. Doesn't talk much about his personal life, but can be convinced to spill the beans if he's got enough alcohol in his system.Danny's Gun- an eccentric, big-hearted and humorous ex-hitman for an organized crime group who changed his ways but regrets nothing (but this is a secret). "cool" look (GLASSES or the like), but a very nice and honest person, even if a tad weird (and VERY mysterious) sometimes...Cookie's Nerd- A rude, condescending, and otherwise mean jerkface who happens to be German.. and is seemingly heartless.DBB's Nerd- an eccentric artsy mapmaker adventurer girl. She can kinda take care of herself when it comes to survival but she's a little odd perhaps and has problems with people touching her drawings and maps.
There should be this researcher AKA "main science nerd" who finds an orb map thing and it leads to a place reeeally deep underwater, but everyone thinks he's a quack except for this rich old guy, so he gets this really cool submarine and there's freaky monster things that attack them on the way...

My only point of reference for the genre is Girl Genius, so while I can say it sounds interesting, I can't give an actual opinion. What are some works (comics, movies, anything) that you could say are more in line with what you have in mind?
